Cuphead et Cadence of Hyrule sont les 2 jeux vidéo indépendants qui ont fait le plus parlé d'eux ces dernières heures suite aux Nindies Showcase, une présentation tenue par Nintendo of America où la firme présente des jeux de développeurs indépendants à venir sur Nintendo Switch. Le premier étant une production soutenu par Microsoft, le deuxième étant la première production d'un studio indépendant à inclure véritablement une IP Nintendo comme cross-over.
Game Informer a eu l'occasion d'interviewer Nintendo et les développeurs à l'occasions de la GDC et ainsi en apprendre plus sur l'arrivée de ces 2 jeux sur Nintendo Switch.
Pour Cuphead, on savait il y a 2 ans que Studio MDHR avait initialement déclaré qu'ils n'avaient aucun plan de porter leur jeu sur Nintendo Switch et PlayStation 4, que Microsoft les avaient soutenu et que le jeu resterait ainsi exclusif à la Xbox One / Windows 10 (néanmoins porté sur PC au travers de Steam/GOG/MacOS).
On apprend que Nintendo souhaitait voir Cuphead sur Nintendo Switch et que ce souhait serait parvenu jusqu'à Microsoft qui ait allé voir Studio MDHR. D'après ces derniers, le contexte actuel est désormais en faveur des développeurs indépendants.
Kirk Scott (Nintendo): We’re always trying to get the best content on the platform. So it’s organic, like "Hey, this would be a great idea." Then somebody at Microsoft says, "Hey we think this would be a great idea too." Then they talk to those guys and it just happens.
Jared Moldenhauer (Studio MDHR): Well, from my perspective, and I don’t know so now I’m just speculating, but the industry is changing a little bit more to be more supportive of indies. Why should we have so many walls up? Why not support all gamers and work between the Goliaths like Microsoft and Nintendo to find a balance so that indie gaming can have a better chance… instead of locking things out for the rest of time, that’s kind of a problematic approach that I don’t think would make it in the future.
Scott: Indies are the small guys, so it’s good to give them an opportunity to launch on whatever platforms they can.
Vincent Chon (Nintendo): Our strategy with indies is "I really just to let you guys do your thing." We don’t want to be a roadblock there, we just want to bring great games to fans.
Quant à Cadence of Hyrule, on apprend que Nintendo a été séduit par l'idée d'inclure The Legend of Zelda dans l'univers de Crypt of the NecroDancer et ainsi le studio indie a eu une relation étroite avec Nintendo EPD au Japon.
Ryan Clark (Brace Yourself Games): We were considering making a new Nintendo Switch project, and we imagined how cool it would be to have Zelda characters appearing in NecroDancer; say as DLC. To our surprise, Nintendo was extremely interested in the prospect, and before we knew it we were working on a completely new title, mashing up NecroDancer with The Legend of Zelda!
Kirk Scott (Nintendo): Developers are always reaching out to Nintendo to include IP in their games. When you look at a case like Cadence of Hyrule, there’s special cases in some instances where our Japan team see content and see titles that they want to work with and [the interest is] a two-way street, really.

? Ils nous prennent pour des cons. On est du niveau de Sony là. Donc un studio indépendant qui veut publier son jeu sur Epic Store, Epic se réserve le droit de dire "non votre jeu est pourri". Mais si t'as un jeu à plusieurs milliards de ventes comme GTA ou Metro, bah c'est la porte ouverte.
