One of the first Western reviews for Final Fantasy XIII-2 is in. Game Informer’s Joe Juba rated the title in the magazine’s February issue, giving it a rather high score. That being said, XIII-2 was awarded with an 8.0/10 whereas the original game received a 9.25.

The reviewer is particularly critical of the game’s story, describing it as “laughable and borderline insulting” and states that the game “screws it up at every turn”.

Here’s a noteworthy excerpt from the review:

“…time-travel and alternate realities are easy excuses to have a bunch of crazy stuff happen (or not happen) whenever it’s conveinent. Why is that giant flan blocking may path? Why is that person acting strangely? Here’s a hint: the answer to almost every mystery in the game is ‘a time paradox did it.’”

Aside from XIII-2′s disappointing narrative, Juba wasn’t pleased with the music. It’s his least favorite soundtrack in the entire series and he felt that it featured “too many poppy songs and generic lyrics about changing the past and not giving up hope.”

Criticisms regarding the story and music aside, the reviewer still considers Final Fantasy XIII-2 to be an excellent title. The graphics (specifically the in-game character models and reduction of pre-rendered cinematics), “fun mechanics”, battle system, freedom, and other adjustments were praised. Juba even said that it’s one of his favorite RPGs from a mechanical standpoint. He believes that “If you can detatch yourself from the absurd story, the wealth of content and fun mechanics are extremely satisfying”.
