Battlefield 4 has already set the bar pretty low with a campaign mode that clocks in at around four hours, as noted on Worlds Factory. Well, prepare to have your socks blown off with Call of Duty: Ghosts' campaign mode, because it clocks in at around four and a half hours on the regular difficulty setting.

A tipster, who has early access to the game and completed the story mode, let us know that the campaign is quite paltry and offers less play time than previous entries in the annual shooter series. The game was not only completed in such a short amount of time, but a screenshot of the last level in the campaign mode was passed along to us for proof. Despite the campaign being short, it seems to be a new trend with shooter games these days. One could attribute the short campaigns to the fact that many of these big fall titles are cross generational titles and the developers have had to cut corners to get them playable across multiple platforms.

I'm not sure what to really think about the four-hour campaign given that a lot of it depends on how fun the campaign is; whether or not there are any decent cooperative modes to play; if there are plenty of unlockable secrets to add to your profile or if there are extra challenges. For the most part, the previous eight-hour campaigns usually contained a lot of fluff and stuffing to keep players trudging along.

Effacing the unnecessary missions and gameplay that do nothing more than pad the time frame can't be viewed as a bad thing. I mean, if it's four hours and offers up memorable moments of fun carnage and entertaining tidbits of delectable mayhem, it sure beats eight slagging hours of intermittent fun... right? Well, according to the tipster the campaign was mostly “bleh” (to paraphrase).

I've never been a fan of Call of Duty, so the exchange of campaign length to something shorter and potentially sweeter/terrible doesn't phase me, but it could prove to be the deciding factor of some gamers who put down $60 every year for the same thing that's a little bit different.

Nevertheless, it should be noted that most people buy Call of Duty games for the multiplayer anyway. So an increase in replayability on the multiplayer front at the expense of a less bombastic single-player campaign can't be viewed as all bad. Besides, with split-screen gameplay, new co-op modes and that almost tempting looking Extinction addition, you can't exactly say that it's bad that Activision had Infinity Ward give up four even less memorable hours of the campaign to focus on something that actually adds value to the game.

Call of Duty: Ghosts is set for release this Tuesday for the current generation consoles, and will be available for the next-generation consoles when they launch later in the month. Oh yeah, and don't forget the PS4 version of COD: Ghosts is native 1080p, but the Xbox One version of the game is only native 720p... so, if you don't like jaggies you know which one to go with.

Jeremy Conrad (former IGN Journalist) has commented on Battlefield 4 and Call of Duty: Ghosts running at 720p on Xbox One controversy.

According to Jeremy, FIFA 14, Forza 4 and NBA2K runs at 1080p on Xbox One, whereas CoD: Ghosts and Battlefield 4 runs at 720p.

Jeremy further went on to revealed the exact reason why Microsoft executives, officials and Journalists are not talking about CoD: Ghosts 720p resolution on Xbox One?, because Ghosts review embargo ends of November 5 for all platforms, whereas review embargo on Xbox One version lifts on November 12 because of 720p resolution issue.

"DICE considered delaying the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions of Battlefield 4 after "struggling quite a lot to keep up with the changes" the platform holders made to their hardware in the build-up to release, executive producer Patrick Bach has admitted.

The move would have meant pushing back the title beyond the launch of the two consoles – something the developer managed to avoid after "overcom[ing] those hurdles" and thinking about "what the game actually is on next-gen".


"Well we've been very aggressive with Battlefield 4 in that we want to be out at launch with the next gen consoles," Bach told GamesIndustry.biz while discussing the impact of this week's delay of major next-gen title Watch Dogs. "I think people might not grasp how hard that is, to develop a game at the same time as the hardware. We've been struggling quite a lot to keep up with the changes we've seen - both sides need to adapt and you end up being late. Everything is very complicated. Battlefield itself is a really complicated game, so it doesn't make our lives any easier.

"So we knew we'd set ourselves a tough challenge, but people on the outside seem to think that because there are going to be launch titles, it's easy. What are we spending all our time doing? They don't understand how hard it is! Talking about Watch_Dogs, I don't blame them, there are times when we've considered doing the same thing - luckily we've overcome those hurdles and thought about what the game actually is on the next gen. We've had an excellent team working that out at the same time as the game itself, which is a big struggle. We can see that a lot of the next gen games coming are, arguably, lesser when it comes to the scope of features because of this problem."

Bach's comments suggest DICE may not have been able to realise their next-gen vision for Battlefield 4 as well as they'd have liked – something he hinted at earlier in the year.

Back in August, Bach told VideoGamer.com that the developer would "need to compromise in some places" on Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

"There's always a balance," he said. "'You should have done more with Battlefield 4 [on next-gen].' It's like, well, we do as much as we can but we need to compromise in some places, and in other places we don't compromise at all, and you think we should have done the opposite. Sorry, that's our creative choice. I think that both Microsoft and Sony, they probably have very clever people finding the right balance where you get the most bang for the right buck."

We’ve had word from an anonymous source that Sony’s upcoming PS4 launch title Driveclub is delayed until spring 2014. While no reason for the delay was given it has been reported previously that the game had looked a little unfinished when shown at various events this year.
