At the end of the WPO conference, I figured I had maybe two hours before I needed to leave for the airport. What to do? No time for serious recreation, but darn, I hadn't even made it as far as the pool or beach. Just too busy!
The day was warm and humid, the palm fronds whipped back and forth in a stiff breeze, and a handful of kite surfers flew through the air. As a California girl, being on the beach was no big deal--but it was mighty tempting to at least poke my toes into the Atlantic Ocean.
At this point, I had no interest in chatting with fellow businesswomen--my brain was tired, and my body was right behind it. But with an hour to kill, I rushed across the boulevard, sacked out on a chaise lounge and began soaking up some rays. Before long, a woman on a nearby lounge, who appeared to be a fellow WPO conference attendee, somehow struck up a conversation with me.

Rebecca L. Gubbels turned out to be a WPO chapter chair and director of business development with the Kansas City CPA firm Davis & Bellomo. In very short order, we wound up discussing how to choose the right CPA firm, a topic I am currently grappling with, and her objective insights were useful and appreciated. Nothing special here--a typical networking exchange between businesswomen: Except it was a bit surreal for both of us, with the Atlantic Ocean backdrop, our bathing suit wardrobes, and the WPO bonding that instantly occurred even though we hadn't met during the formal conference.
My takeaway? You just never know where the next gem is going to come from. BTW, I never did poke my toes into the ocean. By the time we got done chatting, I had to race to the airport.
This is my last post about the conference. My lessons and impressions were many and varied. I hope you've enjoyed sharing some of my experiences at the 2010 WPO conference.
